This is primarily a book of color photographs, though there is sufficient text to support the pictures. Having originally bought the same publisher's companion book covering the whole of Britain, I discovered this book and decided to buy this too, though I couldn't buy it as cheaply. In the other book, the section on Scotland occupies 42 pages. Some but not all of the Scottish pictures in that book also appear here. I expected at least that much, but even if all the pictures had been duplicated here, there would still be plenty of justification for buying this book.
Following a six-page introduction, there are sections on eight regions, these being the western isles, the northern highlands, the southern highlands, the inner islands (including Skye), the Grampians / Aberdeen, central Scotland, Glasgow / Clyde valley / Argyll, south-west Scotland and, finally, the borders. In each region, there are pictures of some of Scotland's famous tourist attractions as well as some less obvious scenes, so while the book tries to portray Scotland at its best, it doesn`t slavishly follow where so many have gone before. Here, you'll find pictures of the islands, the mountains, distilleries, harbours, lochs, bridges and so much else.
There are plenty of castles, not all of them famous though Balmoral and Edinburgh are featured. There are two pictures of Edinburgh castle, one of which is a magnificent picture that was taken at sunset and features the spire of St Cuthbert's with the castle behind and to the side of it. Other magnificent castle pictures feature Balmoral, Floors, Kelburn, Dunvegan, Glamis and a very wintry picture of Barcaldine.
The Forth rail bridge didn't make the British book but it is included here. However, instead of a picture focusing entirely on the bridge itself, here we have a picture of part of North Queensferry, with the bridge in the background. The bridge still dominates the picture despite being in the background, which is very clever and makes for a more interesting picture than most Forth rail bridge pictures.
Although rural scenes dominate this book, but a few city scenes are also featured. George Square (Glasgow) and Dundee look great in the featured pictures. There's also a great double-page picture of the city of St Andrews, behind which the golf links form part of the background. There are no close-ups of these, but they feature in plenty of golf books.
Past celebrities are remembered with splendid double-page pictures of the Burns monument and the surrounding area of Alloway, and of Sir Walter Scott's house (looking a bit like a castle) and gardens in Abbotsford.
In this grand tour of Scotland, it is easy to argue about what's been omitted, but I'm glad that the authors didn't just focus on famous landmarks. They included plenty of those, but also selected less obvious but equally interesting scenes, most of which I haven't mentioned here. I suspect that some people would have liked a greater proportion of urban scenes, though I'm happy with the mix here. This book reminds us just how much Scotland has to offer visitors - local, national and international.
